O2 3g Switch Off
O2 have recently completed a successful 3g switch off trial in Stevenage and have now confirmed that their preparations for the 3g switch off are on track. O2 plan to start the full switch off in 2025 and at KAT Communications we are urging customers to ensure they are device ready in order to not lose service.
Compatible Devices
It may sound obvious but all devices need to be 4g/VoLTE compatible, A 3g only device will NOT work after the switch off.
To check if a device is compatible with 4G/5G and 4G calling, also called VoLTE:
Android: Settings > Mobile Networks
iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data
If 4G/5G/VoLTE options do not appear in these menus then the device is most likely not compatible. An internet search for the exact make and model will easily confirm.
O2 have also provided a list of incompatible devices here.
VoLTE / WiFi Calling
As part of this exercise, Zest4 are actively adding VoLTE (WiFi calling) to all new and existing O2 services. You will not be able to remove this.
Your customers may need to activate VoLTE on their Device, please see here for instructions on how to enable this function.
If you require any more information on VoLTE/WiFi Calling please contact our support@katcommunications.co.uk or your account manager.
O2 Switch Off
O2 will begin to phase out 3G services from January 2025, they will be completely discontinued by December 2025.
After this date:
- If you have a 2G/3G/non-VoLTE device: You will only be able to make emergency calls across all coverage areas and will not be able to use Mobile Data.
- If you have a 4G/5G/VoLTE provisioned device: You will be able to access voice, text, and emergency calls in 2G coverage, and will continue to be able to use 4G and 5G Data
Vodafone and EE have alreadt completed their switch off. If you have any concerns re your device or network coverage please contact the team via support@katcommunications.co.uk or 01302 260195.
